Q: How do I clean a hardwood floor?
A: Whether a polyurethane (water or oil base), wax, or hard wax oil, sweeping loose dirt and sand frequently is a great way to preserve your hardwood floors finish. One grain of sand has an average of seven sharp cutting edges, so keeping your floor swept will help provide longevity to your floors finish. To help luster, use the manufacturer’s recommendations of the cleaner for the best way to cut through grime. Any spills should always be wiped up immediately.
Q: During winter months I notice gaps between some of the boards in my hardwood floor. Why does this happen?
A: Hardwood, even though is no longer living, is still hydroscopic (it will absorb or expel moisture relative to its environment). Adding humidification to the air during the low humidity winter months can help alleviate this. Contrary, too much moisture can make your floors swell and appear to rise up on the edges of the boards. This is called cupping. Air conditioning or dehumidification can help alleviate this symptom. Stabilization of temperature and humidity throughout the year is ideal.
Q: Can I still live in my house during the installation of my new hardwood floor before it is finished?
A: Yes, although furniture will have to be moved, and care taken not to damage or stain your unfinished floor at this time.
Q: Can I still stay in my home during the finishing or refinishing process?
A: I offer a variety of water base finishes which are comfortable for most people to tolerate. Most of my clients stay in their home, although, we can discuss other applications. We can discuss a plan to accommodate your lifestyle, as you should not walk on your floors until completion.
Q: I am going to remodel my house. When during this process should I consider finishing my hardwood floors?
A: Your hardwood floors should be one of the last things you do on your project, before touch up paint. You do not want to have another contractor, inadvertently, damage your new hardwood floors, i.e., scratching, scuffing, dropping something that will damage the floor.
Q: I have allergies. How will hardwood floors help alleviate some of my symptoms?
A: Carpet can hold many of the contaminates that can irritate allergy symptoms. Even with frequent vacuuming, many of these contaminates can become trapped in the carpet, i.e., dust, dirt, pet dander, hair, etc. The ease to clean the surface of hardwood floors is appreciated by clients who have had allergies. It makes a difference.
Q: How will I know when its time to refinish my hardwood floors?
A: When your floors are no longer cleaning to a uniform sheen, or they have worn down to bare wood, which hopefully is not the case. When areas show signs of wear, I may be able to offer options of applying a fresh coat of finish to bring back that uniform sheen, without the cost or time consumed by a total refinish.
Q: After my floors are finished, how long before I can walk on them?
A: You can walk on your completed finished floor, in most cases, the next day in stocking feet.
Q: How long after my floors are finished can I put my furniture back?
A: You can put stationary furniture back the next day after applying felt floor protectors to the contact points. The furniture should be set in place, never pushed, pulled, or dragged into place. Furniture that is not stationary like chairs, bar stools, etc. can be put back and used typically after four days.
Q: Which floor should I buy, pre-finished or unfinished?
A: Both are great floors and both have their advantages. With unfinished floors you have the ability to choose color, finish, and sheen of your floor which gives you many design options. Pre-finish floors are able to be walked on immediately after installation.
Q: What thickness of flooring should I buy?
A: Most hardwood flooring is 3/4” thick and gives a large wear layer so the flooring can be refinished many times, and in my experience are the most popular. These floors are designed to last a lifetime. In some cases a thinner floor may be desirable due to height variance, but will have a thinner wear layer, and may not be refinished as many times.
Q: How long does a hardwood floor last?
A: Most hardwood flooring is designed to last a lifetime under normal use. Most people who purchase a hardwood floor will never see the end of its life.
Q: How long does a hardwood floors finish last?
A: For site finished floors, on average, a hardwood floor will need to be refinished about every seven years. It all depends on how well the floor is cared for, and the wear it will endure. Being in the business for over thirty years now, I have many floors over twenty years old that still look great.
Q: How much dust is created when installing and finishing a hardwood floor?
A: Installing a hardwood floor will create some dust. Therefore, closing doors and hanging plastic in archways are good ways to reduce dust from migrating into opposing rooms. Finishing creates less dust than installing due to a dustless sanding system I use.
